Teach Yourself Further German Book
Teach Yourself Further German is the follow-on course in the Teach Yourself tradition — the book for learners who have finished a beginner course and refuse to stop there. Its destination is the fuller German of real life: longer texts, subtler grammar, wider vocabulary, and the confidence to read, listen, and speak beyond the scripted situations.
In the Teach Yourself manner, the course is built for the solitary learner: units organised around realistic material, grammar explained in plain English as it is met, exercises with answers, and steady recycling of everything learned. ‘Further’ is the operative word — the course assumes the foundation and builds the house on it.
It is written for post-beginner self-teachers, students consolidating between levels (the long A2-to-B1 climb), returning learners reactivating dormant German, and anyone who finished Teach Yourself German — or any beginner course — and asked the right question: what next?

Second-stage courses have a harder job than beginner courses: their readers know enough to be bored by simplicity and not enough for native materials. Further German threads that needle in the series’ proven way — authentic-feeling dialogues and readings of genuine interest, vocabulary of adult life (work, media, travel in depth, opinions, the environment, technology), and the intermediate grammar agenda taught as it arises: the subjunctive’s working forms, reported speech, passive constructions, extended word order, connectors that build arguments. Progress is measurable in the material itself: texts lengthen, speeches quicken, and the learner’s German stops being a performance of memorised scenes and becomes a tool for their own thoughts. For the self-teacher it is a complete next year of German; for teachers, a coursebook whose students can also work alone.

About This Book
Every beginner course ends at the same cliff edge: the learner can survive, but cannot yet live, in the language. Further German is the bridge built from that edge — a complete intermediate course in the Teach Yourself self-study tradition, taking the learner from scripted competence toward genuine independence.
What Learners Will Study
Language of Adult Life
Units built on the talk and text of grown-up German: work and ambitions, news and media, travel with complications, health, money, opinions politely and firmly expressed — the material at the level’s true centre, with vocabulary that serves a life, not a holiday.
The Intermediate Grammar Agenda
Konjunktiv II for wishes, courtesy, and hypothesis; reported speech; the passive in use; infinitive and participial constructions; connectors of argument and concession; the finer word order of complex sentences — the structures whose arrival marks the intermediate stage, explained in plain English and practised in context.
Reading and Listening With Length
Longer readings and dialogues that build stamina — the skill intermediate learners most lack — with comprehension work that trains gist first and detail second, the way real reading works.
Key Features
Continuity with self-study is the feature: the Teach Yourself method, pitched exactly one stage higher, fully keyed for the solitary learner. The adult material is the second — nothing here talks down — and the recycling the third: old grammar and vocabulary return inside new units until the intermediate system holds together as one ability.
Who This Book Is For
It is for learners who have completed any beginner German course, students working from A2 toward B1 and beyond, expatriates whose survival German needs deepening, and teachers wanting an intermediate text their students can also use alone. It assumes a foundation and rewards it.
How to Use This Book
Work unit by unit, all exercises in writing, answers checked immediately — the self-study discipline the series is built for. Read the longer texts twice: once for gist without stopping, once slowly with a notebook. Speak the dialogues aloud, and keep a running page of connectors and subjunctive phrases — the intermediate learner’s signature vocabulary. Review finished units monthly; at this level, consolidation is progress.
